Sony Xplod XM-SW3 Car Power Amplifier

On my previous post, quite long time ago on 2018, I have review 2 unit the brand new Sony car power amplifier. It is built around mid 1990, they are all 2 channel power amplifier. The small one is XM-2020S here and the big brother is XM-3020S here. The Sony brand for car audio at that time is pure Sony without the "Xplod" title next to it. For me, the Xplod naming didn't sell at all. Sony keep the Xplod name for very long time until it vanished the popularity by it's own. The naming is very important. Like you naming your own baby right? Xplod name itself is started to put in the market about early 2000. It is not even sells better than the ES Sony car audio branding that already stop production on the same year. Fast forward today, on my hand right now, I got the brand new Sony Xplod XM-SW3. This is the early Sony Xplod with 3 channel power amplifier that dedicated for 2 channel for the front speakers and 1 channel for sub-woofer. Let's find out.

Having the old product in this condition is a bless. The box is not in the good shape, but inside is still the brand new unit. As you can see for the early Sony Xplod unit, the wording Xplod doesn't show too much. Just a little wording shown that this is a Xplod. Very much different with most Sony Xplod car audio which you cannot barely see the Sony logo instead the big Xplod wording.

I really like having the old-school product like this with all complete accessories, expired guarantee letter and manual. Just like a time capsule.

As you can see no big Xplod wording except on the side of this amplifier. That is also quite small Xplod logo.

I wish I could open this amplifier and see the components inside. But why I feel too hard to braking this seal.

Actually I could easily find the inside photo of this amplifier on the internet. It is almost the same discrete components like on the Sony XM-3020S, but in this Sony XM-SW3, there is actually 4 channel with 2 channel already in bridge configuration for dedicated subwoofer. This amplifier is aim for simplicity car audio setups. You only need this amplifier to run front full range speakers and a small subwoofer at the trunk.

I not testing this amplifier yet. I am just happy to have it on my collection. Latter on, I find this Sony Xplod XM-SW3 production date is around 2011. It is nice to have this for sure:)

  1. Sony Xplod did well. It went away because the car audio market shrank and every company contracted their product lines. Many factors but rising gas prices from 2007 on coupled with high youth unemployment from 2009 on as well and rapidly improving factory audio systems (w/ bluetooth streaming) destroyed the entry level to mid part of the car audio market. I never liked the name either but Sony laughed all the way to the bank with it.
