DAC All Around Part 3 - Chord Mojo

This little portable DAC will soon end up on your main listening room for sure. That statement is not kidding, I couldn't say anything more except this Mojo works for me and it should work with you as well.

This tiny device is a portable DAC from Chord named Mojo. The package is come with only small white box, slightly emboss the Chord Mojo label on it. Nothing special.

Open up the box, you will see the information about this DAC on every side of the box.

Chord even put the technical specification here rather have the manual paper. Go green! More detail manual can be download on Chord websites anyway.

Here is the star, the little portable DAC, feels solid and the weight is just right.

The input are accommodate all device now days. Coax input require you to have the 3.5 mm headphones jack to RCA adapter cable.

I made it right away using the Amphenol jack and Canare coaxial cable. It is a simple mono configuration using the further tip of the jack as a positive input connected at the center RCA plugs.

At the top panel, there is large Mojo marking and followed by Chord. Again, this device feels very solid. It is all aluminium.

On the other side, there is two headphones output. Now you can share what you're hear to your friend as well.

This three ball is the most attractive gimmick in this DAC. It gives you lots information based on the colors displayed. The balls are actually a push button. Yes, you can try to slide it and play with them just like I do, but hey, it is only a push button after all.

One on the left is a power button and the light color gives you the information about the type of files source you playing. The others two is the volume control for the headphones internal amp. They change colors every time I adjust the volume.

To be honest, this navigation looks complicated. But it is not. Once you are familiar with it, this button navigation is become very useful and simple.

I do test this DAC using headphones directly connected to the headphones output at this DAC. It is very good, but not the full potential of this DAC yet. You should using the DAC line out capability by pressing and hold both volume up and down, then pressing the power button when turn on this device. It will switch the headphones output to the line out with the color code for both volume is now become blue. This Is the game changer now!

I listen this Chord Mojo from the line out connected to the headphones amp both Schiit or STAX and also in my home audio. The sound is wonderful. I never thought this US$500 Chord Mojo will sound like thousand dollar DAC out there. The music presentation is very natural, not even a note are more dominant. The music is very coherent in all frequency. Listening for long period of time will make you immerse with the music. You feels the vocalist is playing right in front of you, it is sound clear, the emotion, the breath taking is feels through your ears. You will never leave the sweet spot for long period of time until you remember have to go work.

Remember this Chord Mojo is actually a portable DAC running through the batteries inside. This what I think is the advantages from it. The batteries is very linear source of power, once it drawn out, I only need to hook the micro USB for charging this device. The playing time with batteries is about 8 hours and charging period is quite takes some times. Maybe about 4 hours until the charge light indicator lit off.

Looking the size of this Chord Mojo is tiny and smallest DAC among the others. If you plan to have it, then go ahead! You will never look back to other DAC again. It is a master piece of affordable hi-end DAC right now.

Anyway, I also hook this Mojo via optical cable to my TV. Setting up the sound option to optical out and set up to PCM digital output, then here we go. I playing PS4 games with this DAC through my headphones and it sound as wonderful as it gets:)

OPA1622 Vs. OPA627 High Performance Op-amps Comparison

This op-amps comparison topic is actually boring, but at the same time, many of us still curious about what others think about it. Vintage Multibit R2R DAC Tier List

At the very beginning of this year, I committed to explore the best multi-bit R2R DAC. This is simply because I have plenty of the resources (from broken old unit CD player of course) and ability to build them up. If you think this kind a recycle from old un-used unit to become something useful, than I should stated myself giving contribute for greener world:) After all DAC that I built in this year, I think it is better for me to list them up again in one single page like this. Then I will rank them up in a simple tier list. The reason for this, so you all know what my opinion about of those vintage multibit R2R DAC especially in the sound quality.

TDA1543 DAC Review In 2021

It is a fine day and as usual I am reading and searching online contents related to almost anything I like. During my search, I stop to the few online forum discuss about a simple DAC using TDA1543 DAC IC. The discussion about this DAC was about 3 years ago, and the latest was about a year ago. Quite new and overall discussion about this DAC sound quality mostly are positive. It is interesting topic anyway especially I was built this TDA1543 DAC long time ago in 2016. At that time, I combine this DAC with Tripath amplifier  here  and  here  before it sold in 2019. That is also my first DIY DAC and I am quite enjoyed this DAC so much, at that time. The background story about this, previously I was using Sony Playstation SCPH-1002 as my reference CD Player. The reason I moved to this TDA1543 DAC is because the CD optic inside the Playstation is wear out and I cannot find the replacement for it. I pretty remember the sound quality of this TDA1543 DAC is quite comparable...
