Building TPA3118 Class D Car Amplifier

This car amplifier project is using the old car power amplifier I had. I removed all the amplifier components and leave the power supply section with several components such as input connector and potentiometer in place. I am using this power supply board for my testing purpose. Especially when the new idea comes on myself and it is related to the car audio system. Just like this one, I will build a class D car amplifier based on TPA3118 from Texas Instrument.

The board from old car power amplifier is quite nice. It is double layer board with TL494CN for the PWM control unit. It is quite common to find any car amplifier using this kind IC for the switching section. As you can see I only changes the capacitor to a better grade.

Only the power supply unit, the rest of all components has been removed.

Since the new power amplifier only require single rail power supply, then I should re-wire the transformer output wires. I will make it parallel to make it double in ampere.

It is a simple rewire from dual rail CT: 1 , 2+3 , 4 to single rail: 1+3 , 2+4.

I using another dismantled board available on my bin for the AC - DC converter.

You will rarely find the full wave DC power supply in car audio amplifier like this.

The DC out which is about 20 volt will connect to the amplifier board.

You will ask why don't I just connect the voltage input directly to the battery car by using single relay for remote on? Well, first of all, the common ground will be an ground loop issue to the head unit by using direct voltage from the car battery. Second, you will not get the full potential of this class D amplifier by only using 12 volt battery. Specification wise, 24 volt will give you about 30 clean watt per channel.

The modification to the TPA's board is only changing the SMD input capacitor to Siemens MKP capacitor. They are quite big and I have to put them outside the TPA's board. Remove C7 (+INR), C8 (-INR), C16 (+INL), and C20 (-INL). The -IN will go to audio ground.

I using the 10 K ohm potentiometer for the gain control.

Then connect them all together. The ground from TPA's board to the main board should be also connected. Mention the green one is actually a silver Teflon cable for grounding jumper.

It almost finish. New capacitor also added to replace the small one.

It is now done:)

I leave it open just like that. I forget where do I put the rest parts of the case.

This Class D car amp is an evaluation project and until now I haven't test it yet in the real car audio system. But by the result when testing on my desk, it sound very dynamic and open. So much different in sound quality compares when I only using the 12 volt input for this TPA3118 amp.

OPA1622 Vs. OPA627 High Performance Op-amps Comparison

This op-amps comparison topic is actually boring, but at the same time, many of us still curious about what others think about it. The reason is simply because of the op-amps variation are hundreds and they are depends by the implementation. The op-amps are considerably cheap and an interchangeable electronic components but they are not built for the same function. So in this discussion, I will focus on the modern Vs. vintage high performance op-amps in the simple non-inverting pre-amplifier gain stage.

Vintage Multibit R2R DAC Tier List

At the very beginning of this year, I committed to explore the best multi-bit R2R DAC. This is simply because I have plenty of the resources (from broken old unit CD player of course) and ability to build them up. If you think this kind a recycle from old un-used unit to become something useful, than I should stated myself giving contribute for greener world:) After all DAC that I built in this year, I think it is better for me to list them up again in one single page like this. Then I will rank them up in a simple tier list. The reason for this, so you all know what my opinion about of those vintage multibit R2R DAC especially in the sound quality.

TDA1543 DAC Review In 2021

It is a fine day and as usual I am reading and searching online contents related to almost anything I like. During my search, I stop to the few online forum discuss about a simple DAC using TDA1543 DAC IC. The discussion about this DAC was about 3 years ago, and the latest was about a year ago. Quite new and overall discussion about this DAC sound quality mostly are positive. It is interesting topic anyway especially I was built this TDA1543 DAC long time ago in 2016. At that time, I combine this DAC with Tripath amplifier  here  and  here  before it sold in 2019. That is also my first DIY DAC and I am quite enjoyed this DAC so much, at that time. The background story about this, previously I was using Sony Playstation SCPH-1002 as my reference CD Player. The reason I moved to this TDA1543 DAC is because the CD optic inside the Playstation is wear out and I cannot find the replacement for it. I pretty remember the sound quality of this TDA1543 DAC is quite comparable...
