STAX SRM-252S Blackgate Capacitor

If you following the components upgrade on the STAX SRM-252S previously here & here, you probably know that the capacitor near the transformer labeled C36 is has critical point to effect the sound quality. That is why I leave it with the standard OEM Sanyo capacitor after I change it to higher grade but the sound comes worse. Then on hand I got this Rubycon Blackgate capacitor. It is a legendary capacitor that still glorify by many audiophile until today. Not harm for me to test this new capacitor once again in the STAX SRM-252S headphones amplifier and what is the result after this upgrade is so curious.

I measure this Blackgate capacitor using digital LCR meter and this is the result.

Previously I using the Elna Cerafine which the look very similar to this Blackgate capacitor but the result in sound improvement not so good.

Surprisingly the measurement result of Cerafine is actually better than Blackgate in term of ESR and V-Loss.

Open up the STAX headphones amplifier, this is the green Sanyo capacitor that I will replace with this Blackgate capacitor. Marking on the board is C36 and location near the transformer.

This replacement only takes few minutes and the new capacitor is in.

Honestly this is my first experience with Blackgate capacitor. I do all out in this section after several times desperate with the bad result from changing to other well known capacitors brands. I guess the Blackgate is the best capacitor right now and I just want to put it in.

Rumors said that every Blackgate capacitor sound worse before breaking in. It will also need long time to breaking in. I guess it is about more than 300 hours. But in my case, this replacement to Blackgate give noticeable improvement on the mid range right after I change it. It is not subjective but it is the new improvement on how the vocal sound deliver more detail. This improvement give better vocal presence just like right in front of you. I still hoping the longer it work, the more improvement I got from this Blackgate capacitor after it is breaking in.

  1. Hi, is it easy to find that capacitor in Jakarta?
If you're willing to share, how much is their price approximately?

    Thanks.

  3. Hello Orronoco.

What is the function of this C36 elco and why the replacement cap should have larger capacitance?

On the other note, you might want to checkout on Audio Note Kaisei electrolytic capacitors since they are the replacement for Rubycon Blackgate.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi, the C36 is the DC filter capacitor before the step up transformer.
I end up with the Black gate because it has good effect the sound quality compare when using the other brand.
The value is not so critical, better larger than the original value to get higher ripple rejection.

  4. have you ever compare blackgate vs silmic ii ?

    1. It depends on the circuitry.
in my experience, Silmic is better when use on the signal decoupling and Blackgate on the power supply

OPA1622 Vs. OPA627 High Performance Op-amps Comparison

This op-amps comparison topic is actually boring, but at the same time, many of us still curious about what others think about it. The reason is simply because of the op-amps variation are hundreds and they are depends by the implementation. The op-amps are considerably cheap and an interchangeable electronic components but they are not built for the same function. So in this discussion, I will focus on the modern Vs. vintage high performance op-amps in the simple non-inverting pre-amplifier gain stage.

Vintage Multibit R2R DAC Tier List

At the very beginning of this year, I committed to explore the best multi-bit R2R DAC. This is simply because I have plenty of the resources (from broken old unit CD player of course) and ability to build them up. If you think this kind a recycle from old un-used unit to become something useful, than I should stated myself giving contribute for greener world:) After all DAC that I built in this year, I think it is better for me to list them up again in one single page like this. Then I will rank them up in a simple tier list. The reason for this, so you all know what my opinion about of those vintage multibit R2R DAC especially in the sound quality.

TDA1543 DAC Review In 2021

It is a fine day and as usual I am reading and searching online contents related to almost anything I like. During my search, I stop to the few online forum discuss about a simple DAC using TDA1543 DAC IC. The discussion about this DAC was about 3 years ago, and the latest was about a year ago. Quite new and overall discussion about this DAC sound quality mostly are positive. It is interesting topic anyway especially I was built this TDA1543 DAC long time ago in 2016. At that time, I combine this DAC with Tripath amplifier  here  and  here  before it sold in 2019. That is also my first DIY DAC and I am quite enjoyed this DAC so much, at that time. The background story about this, previously I was using Sony Playstation SCPH-1002 as my reference CD Player. The reason I moved to this TDA1543 DAC is because the CD optic inside the Playstation is wear out and I cannot find the replacement for it. I pretty remember the sound quality of this TDA1543 DAC is quite comparable...
