Bigger Sub-woofer Box For Lower Freq Bass Response

What are you expecting when install a big sub-woofer on your trunk? For me, I want to hear a deep loud bass with the timing that coherence with the overall music. The bass should penetrate to the music and to the room very well.

I personally do not need sub-woofer. But it is different to my friend. He come to me and ask for my help, why don't we build one giant sub-woofer box that not just sound loud, but it will sound much deeper. So let's this project begin.


The original design plan is taken from searching the google. We found this is the suitable sub-woofer box plans and we certainly adjusting on few measurement to suit to the sub-woofer size.


From the plain MDF board, we start to measured it, then cut the board and glued them together. This box is attach not using any screw or nail at all. We using the glue that special for wood and surprisingly they are attached really very well.


It is about 8 working hours in total, not to count the time for the glue to be dry. The result as you can see here is surprising excellent for a beginner speaker box builder like us.

We would like to test it on home theater system but at this moment we don't have suitable amplifier to drive the sub-woofer. So we put it on car instead.

See how big is the box. We using lot of space on the back of this small wagon. It required almost half of the trunk for this giant sub-woofer box to fit in.


I forget to mention that the sub-woofer is an American brand: Cross-fire, a 12 inch subwoofer powered by Zapco amplifier. This amplifier is 2 channel but set to bridge for bigger power at single channel.


The source is the OEM head unit and using the Pioneer KEH-P9750 as an external DSP. It is an old head unit but has lots of great audio features. You can see my post about this Pioneer head unit turn into an external DSP on my previous post.


We set the best position for this sub several times. Once we found the great spot for this box, the sub-woofer deliver lower bass as we expected. The bass is loud and deep. The car interior is all shaking like crazy. This is an experimental project that turn a smile on his face.

PCM56 R2R Non Oversampling DAC Built

From early this year, I am start to playing a lot with the multibit DAC. They are from Sony CDP TDA1541A here , Nakamichi DAC-101 dual TDA1541S1 here , Clarion DRX-9255EXL PCM1702 here  and Clarion HX-D1 PCM1704 here . What I said playing with them is actually more suitable words because none of them are built by myself. I only study and exploring those unit then make some upgrade especially on the power supply components, signal capacitors upgrade, and bypassing the unused internal circuit for more clearer yet natural sound quality. This upgrade make a lot improvement compare to the first time I listen from it and I can really enjoy what the designer from each manufacture deliver the sound they would like to perform in those units. Those said units are categorized as a parts of hi-end audio system and I really now familiar with the sound signature from each of them. But to be honest, I am not satisfy yet with this condition. Because none of them is built by myself from ground up. ...
